Exhibition at the Hôtel de Caumont, Aix-en-Provence, 17 November 2023 - 24 March 2024
A visionary artist, Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) revolutionised his contemporaries' relationship with art by applying his characteristic aesthetic to a wide range of fields, including posters, advertising, interior decoration and theatre.
Thanks to his meeting with Sarah Bernhardt in 1894, the Paris of the Belle Époque was adorned with the works of this virtuoso creator, who developed and imposed the Art Nouveau style as the essential artistic avant-garde at the turn of the century.
Through almost one hundred and twenty works from the Mucha Foundation - posters, decorative panels and paintings - this exhibition catalogue highlights the splendour and evolution of Mucha's art, where mysticism, symbolism, Slavic identity and beauty come together. The book examines the committed thinking of the Czech artist, as a constitutive element of his work.
