A versatile artist, painter, engraver and illustrator, André Devambez (1877-1944) moved between serious and playful subjects. Although today he is little known to the public, he received all the honours during his lifetime and enjoyed a great reputation. After winning the Grand Prix de Rome for painting in 1890, Devambez became the official painter of the Ministère de l'Air in 1934 and head of the painting studio at the Beaux-Arts de Paris between 1929 and 1937.

At the turn of the Belle Époque, which saw the emergence of a stream of marginal creators in the capital, André Devambez, an artist and a witness to a modern society in motion - as evidenced by his subjects on the airplane, the cinematograph, or the telephone - treated with verve realistic or fanciful subjects from an always unexpected angle.

Richly illustrated, this exhibition catalogue is the first complete book devoted to Devambez. It includes reproductions of the 250 works by the artist presented at the exhibition.
