André Marfaing (1925-1987) was a French non-figurative painter and printmaker associated with abstraction and informal art. After a few attempts at still life, landscapes and portraits in the 1940s, Marfaing switched to non-figurative painting in 1952, a fundamental step that led him to abstraction. His oils on canvas are marked by a predominance of black, applied in thick layers, revealing contrasts between black and white, shadow and light. From 1971 onwards, the artist turned to acrylic and produced refined and ascetic works.

This catalogue raisonné offers a complete repertory of Marfaing's painted work, from his early works (1948-1952) to his last paintings, completed in 1986. The book also traces the artist's career and development through his writings, friendships and struggles.
