Exhibition at the Musée de l'Hospice Saint-Roch, Issoudun, 5 June 2021 - 19 September 2021
In 2001, Pierre Daix devoted a book to the Catalan painter Antoni Clavé (1913-2005) in which he wrote that the material dimension of his collages was for him an end in itself, and the assemblage, an outcome.
For the twentieth anniversary of Pierre Daix's publication, the Musée de l'Hospice Saint-Roch presents an exhibition devoted to Antoni Clavé's assemblages in painting, collage, sculpture, tapestry and other objects. More than a tribute to the friendship between the artist and the man of letters, the catalogue puts Antoni Clavé's art into perspective in the history of 20th century assemblage. The analysis of a selection of works from 1960 to 2002 allows us to rediscover his taste for matter, its alterations, its erosions, thus exploring the materials that he liked to entangle, juxtapose, and sometimes, also, subtract.
