Augmented reissue of 1867 edition

Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) plays a remarkable role in the history of ancient-art reception. He created most of his works in Rome, where he has lived for almost 40 years, being praised by Antonio Canova. Great rival of the latter, Thorvaldsen stand out from Canova with a more rigorous application of the aesthetic canons specific to ancient statuary.

Published in 1867, this biography by Eugène Plon (1836-1895) - the most complete book ever published on the artist - is reissued for the 250th anniversary of Thorvaldsen's birth. It includes a catalogue of works, a critical apparatus and several texts from authors of the time.
