Venice Biennale, 20 April - 24 November 2024
The 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale takes its name from a series of artworks produced in 2004 by the Claire Fontaine collective, and aims to be "a celebration of the foreign, the distant, the outsider, the queer and the indigenous". It focuses on artists who are themselves foreigners, immigrants, expatriates, diasporics, emigrants, exiles and refugees, particularly those who have moved between the South and the North of the planet.
The exhibition is divided into two parts: 'Nucleo Contemporaneo', for contemporary artists, and 'Nucleo Storico', for historical artists. The first develops the concept of the foreign or outsider artist, while the second examines works of art created in the global South between 1905 and 1990.
This Biennale catalogue follows the exhibition route through the exhibition spaces of the Giardini and the Arsenale, and also presents the other projects on show at various venues in Venice and at Forte Marghera in Mestre.
