Exhibition at the Fondation Maeght, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, 29 June - 6 October 2024
This catalogue of the exhibition organised to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the Fondation Maeght focuses on the friendly relationship between Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) and Henri Matisse (1869-1954), and traces their links with the Maeght family, for whom the two artist-friends embodied two geniuses of the twentieth century, sharing with them the great - and more trivial - moments of life.
The exhibition is organised around a number of themes, with many rare works and documents, as well as exceptional loans granted for the occasion. The book examines the specific characteristics of the two masters, but also, by mirror effect, the particularities of each in their approach to the same subjects: self-portraits, the street, the light of the Midi, the painter and his model...
