Located about thirty kilometres from Saint Petersburg, the town of Tsarskoye Selo was founded in the 18th century as the residence of the Tsars. Renamed "Pushkin" after the Russian Revolution, the city is home to the Catherine Palace, built by the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli on commission from the Empress Elisabeth Petrovna (1709-1762), and the Alexander Palace, the work of Giacomo Quarenghi, built by Catherine II (1729-1796) for the wedding of her grandson, the future Alexander I. The palaces of Tsarskoye Selo contain magnificent collections of decorative arts.

This beautifully illustrated book presents a selection of 18th and 19th century bronzes, clocks, lamps, vases and candlesticks, many of them of French manufacture, belonging to the collections of the "Village of Tsars".
