Exhibition at the Musée de l'Annonciade, Saint-Tropez, 10 July - 14 November 2023
A Pointillist and then a Divisionist, Henri Edmond Cross (1855-1910) was, along with Signac and Seurat, part of the Neo-Impressionist movement. Originally from the north of France, Cross moved to Provence in 1900 for health reasons, and gradually freed himself from reality by imagining mythical landscapes, pagan festivals and floods of light.
Through Cross's paintings of Provence, this exhibition catalogue pays homage to the artist who influenced Matisse and the Fauvists by placing the science of colour at the heart of 20th-century painting.
