In the 1890s, Edouard Vuillard and Ker-Xavier Roussel initially sought to renew landscape painting by applying the radical experimentation of the Nabi aesthetic. However, they returned to Post-Impressionism ten years later and in the 1920s and 1930s aimed to return to the tradition of French classicism, in a "return to order" that blended the heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries with the great decorations of Puvis de Chavannes.

In this exhibition catalogue, the first study on the theme of landscape by the two artists, three essays shed light on their unique relationship, the specificities of their use of pastel and the artistic context of the 1890s and the first decades of the 20th century. A catalogue then brings together the 80 works - paintings and drawings - presented, with numerous annotations.
