Exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, 4 May - 9 September 2024
Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015) is considered one of the most important American abstract painters and sculptors. Spanning seven decades, his career is marked by the independence of his art from any school or artistic movement and by his innovative contribution to twentieth-century painting and sculpture.
This catalogue of the first exhibition in France to tackle Ellsworth Kelly's work with such a broad chronological spectrum includes over a hundred works - paintings, drawings, photographs and collages. The works by the American artist are reproduced alongside studies by those familiar with his work and contributions on lesser-known aspects, including photography, the freedom of his work, its reception in the Middle East, and its memorial dimension.
The book also includes a richly illustrated chronology that looks back at Kelly's decisive stay in France in the immediate post-war period and his contribution to the American scene at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s.
