Fernand Dubuis (1908-1991), a leading figure in 20th-century abstract painting, created works that embraced the trends of his time - post-cubism and abstraction - while incorporating references from the past. In his early years, he had a similar admiration for his contemporaries Fernand Léger and Roger de La Fresnaye and for the old masters, especially Caravaggio and Francisco de Zurbarán. His painting is similar to the colourful, "baroque" expressiveness of André Lhote and to the exalted combination of colours of Nicolas de Staël.
This monograph presents the life and work of the Valaisan artist who spent most of his life between Paris, Gordes and Normandy, places whose atmosphere and light have profoundly influenced his work.
