Presenting works produced from the 1950s onwards, this exhibition catalogue explores British painter Francis Bacon's (1909-1992) deep connection with portraiture and the way in which he challenged traditional definitions of the genre. The book traces the British artist's development, highlighting the influence of his peers and other artists, and brings together works from public and private collections, including self-portraits and portraits of Lucian Freud, Isabel Rawsthorne and lovers Peter Lacy and George Dyer.
