A curious man, a painter and traveller, concerned with the truth about people, François Auguste Biard (1799-1882) is one of the forgotten representatives of Romantic painting. Famous in the 1840s for his comic genre scenes, he is now recognised for his landscapes of the Arctic Ocean or the Amazon, and acclaimed for his works denouncing the slave trade or focusing on madness.
Thanks to numerous unpublished works, this exhibition catalogue, which includes the first monograph devoted to Biard, restores the incredible diversity of the artist's career.
