François Pompon (1855-1933) was 67 when he suddenly came out of shadow with his monumental Ours blanc (polar bear) exhibited in 1922 at the Salon d'Automne. After having spent his life working of other sculptors, of which Auguste Rodin, he finally established his intemporal and lively image of animals. Although the Ours blanc became, a century after its creation, an icon of modern sculpture, Pompon's work in its whole, equally innovative, still remains unknown.

This book recounts the career of Pompon, from his early daring sculptures to his portraits and extraordinary bestiary.
