Deceptively simple or fantastically complex, ikat has been used for centuries to create extravagant costumes and garments of deep cultural significance. The fuzzy, feathery or jagged patterns of ikat-dyed textiles are found throughout much of the world, from Japan to Central and South America, as well as large parts of Southeast Asia, India, Central Asia and the Middle East.

The traditional designs retain their cultural significance today in many regions where ikat has been woven for a long time. Textile artists and fashion designers in many countries have taken ikat in new directions, respecting traditional forms and palettes while departing from them in creative ways.
