Little is known about Gustave Caillebotte, who was only rediscovered in 1994 to mark the centenary of his death. A patron of the Impressionist movement, which he joined alongside Monet, Degas, Pissarro and Renoir, he was a painter of Haussmann-style Paris, of parquet planers, of elegant passers-by sheltering under their umbrellas, of a few urban watchmen perched on balconies. But we remember above all his legacy, his Impressionist canvases given to the State in a spectacular coup de force, which formed the basis of the Musée d'Orsay's collections. However, the essence of his personality, his intimate temperament, eludes us. For Caillebotte, painting was a reflection of life, akin to a diary.
Drawing on family archives, this biography looks back at Gustave Caillebotte's career, placing his work in the context of his family, social and economic environment, that of the Parisian bourgeoisie under the Third Empire. It describes his upbringing, his pictorial training, his participation in the 1870 war and his decisive encounter with the Impressionist group. The book reveals a passionate, inquisitive character, surrounded by anxiety, investing himself wholeheartedly in all his passions, starting with art, and a certain taste for humour and social commentary.
