Jean Nocret (1615-1672) was less the painter of Louis XIV than of his only brother, Philippe, Duke of Orléans, who commissioned him to paint The Royal Family in Olympus in the late 1660s for his Château de Saint-Cloud. The painting is emblematic of the prevailing taste at the château, a less martial and more graceful double palace of Versailles, whose renovation work predated it by ten years.

An exuberant portrait of Louis XIV accompanied by his family, and measuring an imposing 12 m2, the work is now one of the most popular paintings at the Château de Versailles. This brilliant composition, with its shimmering colours, epitomises the art of the French court in the 17th century, but its aura has not prevented its creator from falling into anonymity.

This generously illustrated book, the first devoted to Jean Nocret since 1886, is the result of a genuine investigation of archives and public and private collections. It brings to life an unexpected and singular painter who lived in Lorraine, Rome, Lisbon and Paris. Often spectacular, his works bring back to life a forgotten patronage, that of Monsieur, the Sun King's only brother.
