This book focuses on the life of cabinetmaking and bronze furnishing companies active in Paris in the second half of the 19th century, a pivotal moment between the persistence of the taste for the 18th century, which became established around 1860, and the blossoming of Art Nouveau around 1900. It seeks to understand the workings of the workshops and to identify the main characteristics of this production, starting with the origins and effects of the craze for the 18th century, which led to the production of copies of famous furniture and works of style.

This comparative study is based on the examples of the Parisian furniture makers who were among the most famous at the time: Henry Dasson, Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley, Paul Charles Sormani, Gervais-Maximilien Durand, Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener, his successor Jean-Henri Jansen, the Millet family, father and son, and also the Krieger company.
