The Vendôme column, a key monument in Parisian life, commemorates the great Napoleonic epic of the Austerlitz campaign over 200 metres of bas-reliefs. Thirty-two sculptors, directed by Vivant Denon, have brought its decor and its great battles to life, summoning more than 2,000 characters.
By identifying the various actors, their roles, costumes and weapons, this book provides a better understanding of the people of Napoleon's Grande Armée. Using contemporary photos and archives, it looks back at the history of the Vendôme Column.
