Exhibition at the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, Paris, 14 December 2021 - 10 April 2022
The South-West of Congo corresponds more or less to the former province of Bandundu, which included the current territories of Kwango, Kwilu and Mai-Ndombe, while also incorporating the current province of Kinshasa. The territory includes an extraordinary diversity of statuary, masks and other everyday objects.
This exhibition catalogue gives an overview of the traditional arts of Bandundu: 150 works created by the Yaka, Pende, Tshokwe and Suku, and by minority groups such as the Yanzi, Buma, Lyembe, Sakata or Mbala are analysed, from their typological, iconographic and stylistic characteristics to the details of their use.
