Chantilly, "the most beautiful house in France" according to Henri IV who was a faithful guest, is striking for its originality, which is expressed as much in the layout of its natural site as in the history of the men who have shaped and inhabited it. Chantilly is exceptional because of the layout of its gardens, where Le Nôtre was pleased to create a dispersed order, thus abandoning the single axis of the Versailles model. The architecture also bears witness to an undeniable originality: the d'Orgemonts, the Montmorencies, the Condés and the Duc d'Aumale all had the same predilection for this place, which led them to constantly transform it, calling on the best architects of their time.

Based on numerous old documents as well as plans to visualise the different states of Chantilly, this book allows us to follow, century after century, the adventure of this monument which is a rival to Versailles.
