The history of the Palais de l'Élysée has been marked by changes in its use and therefore in its organisation. In each era, the former hôtel du comte d'Évreux has embodied a place of modernity in terms of furnishings and interior décor, in keeping with successive fashions. Elements of the architecture and décor left by its occupants survive: the Marquise de Pompadour, the financier Beaujon, Joachim and Caroline Murant, Napoleon and Josephine, the Duke and Duchess of Berry, Napoleon III and the presidents of the Third, Fourth and Fifth Republics...
This book, co-published with the Mobilier national, in charge of the upkeep of the Presidency of the Republic, traces the history of the palace and its successive inhabitants from its construction in 1718 to the present day. Lavishly illustrated with archive documents and contemporary photographs by Guillaume de Laubier, it is the fruit of the work of the curators and restorers at the Mobilier National and specialists in the field from a range of museums and institutions.
