Exhibition. Saint-Etienne, Museum of Art and Industry. 2016-2017
Some objects have the ability to combine past, present and future. Such as the ribbon to which this book is dedicated, which takes us on a novel and scholarly journey from the ancient silk routes to the new textiles and haute couture. The catalog sensitively recreates the history of this industry which combines artistic creation with mechanical production, the refinement of fashion with the practicality of design: colors, reliefs, simple or more sophisticated patterns testify to the traditional and modern character of ribbon.
A must-see is the city of Saint-Etienne which, since the 16th century, has become a Mecca for this know-how and has the largest collection of ribbons in the world in its Museum of Art and Industry. Its famous dynasties of passementiers as well as the social fabric and the places where this unique industrial adventure took place are illuminated by multidisciplinary contributions and photographic reports.
