From the Valois to the second French Empire, performances were one of the main entertainments during the stays at the Château de Fontainebleau. In 1725, the royal residence has been the first one to have a hall devoted to performances.

The theatre was inaugurated in 1857, but presented only ten representations until the last imperial stay in Fontainebleau in 1868. During the 20th century, it turned back to life only during the German occupation between 1940 and 1945.

This book presents the history, the richness and authenticity of the last French court theatre, thanks to its restoration begun in 2007.
