Exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, 10 March - 13 September 2020 ;
then at La Piscine, Roubaix, 17 October 2020 - 9 May 2021
This exhibition catalogue proposes a rediscovery of Léopold Chauveau, an atypical artist, sculptor, illustrator and author of children's books whose singular work has monsters as its central theme. Hybrids, seemingly emerging from his unconscious, his creatures can be part of a genealogy of art history following the medieval gargoyles or the beings that populate the paintings of Jérôme Bosch.
"I draw monsters - very nice, very sweet, very harmless - very ridiculous next to the real and living monsters that are now shaking up the world." Léopold Chauveau, 27 September 1939
