Exhibition at the Fondation Gianadda, Martigny, 7 July 2023 - 21 January 2024
Characterised by its extensive use of pure colour, Fauvism is considered to be the first pictorial movement of the twentieth century.
At the Salon d'Automne in 1905, Matisse, Manguin, Derain, Vlaminck, Camoin and Marquet, among others, exhibited works created in reaction to the ephemeral variations in atmosphere and the unstable vibrations of light in Impressionist paintings. These excesses aroused the ire of the public and art critics, who lashed out violently at the new painters.
This exhibition catalogue brings together around a hundred emblematic works of Fauvism - paintings, sculptures and ceramics - on loan from the Centre Pompidou, the Musée Paul Dini, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux and private collections.
