Over a period of some forty years, Jean-Claude Gandur has assembled an exceptional collection of 400 objects of classical antiquities. This two-volume work analyses 200 of them, offering a sparkling panorama of Greco-Roman antiquity, from geometric Italy to the Roman East of the Late Empire, via Archaic Cyprus, Classical Greece and Hellenistic Egypt. Each of these objects, classified by theme, origin and date, is analysed from the typological and iconographic point of view, before being placed in the historical context in which it was created.
The first volume explores the theme of ancient religion through representations of idols, gods and goddesses, and bearers of offerings; the second focuses on particularly refined objects, luxurious frivolities described in ancient times as deliciæ.
