Julius von Schlosser (1866-1938) was curator at the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna when was published in 1908 the first edition, in German, of this book. He wrote it in contact with the objects. From Ancient Greece to the beginnings of European 20th century, this book recounts the genesis of these chambres de merveilles to the modern forms they led to, the museums.
In this new edition, Patricia Falguières's preface replaces the text in its historical and artistic context, and her postscript make the link between these chambres de merveilles and our contemporary conception of exhibition.
