Renowned for her characteristic draping and asymmetrical dresses, Madame Grès (1903-1993) was one of the leading fashion designers of twentieth-century Paris. Trained as a sculptor, her haute couture creations were both complex and delicate, evoking ancient statuary and exuding timeless elegance.

Madame Grès enjoyed her heyday between the 1930s and 1950s, followed by a comeback in the 1970s, with Yves Saint Laurent and Issey Miyake championing her work. His creations have inspired many of fashion's most illustrious designers, including Cristóbal Balenciaga, Azzedine Alaïa, Yohji Yamamoto and Haider Ackermann, as well as the pioneers of contemporary minimalism in the 1990s, Calvin Klein and Jil Sander.

This monograph presents the couture work of Madame Grès, appreciated by many women, including Marlene Dietrich, Grace of Monaco, Jackie Kennedy, the Duchess of Windsor and Édith Piaf.
