The American financier and banker J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) is regarded in art history as one of the world's most important collectors. He assembled a unique collection of art ranging from medieval manuscripts to Old Master paintings and European decorative arts, acquiring in particular Georges Hoentschel's two collections of 18th-century enamel and decorative art, one of which he donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Richly illustrated, this book presents a portrait of J. Pierpont Morgan as a collector through various essays by renowned experts, and examines his acquisitions in context. The study also pays tribute to Linda Roth, curator at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, who has devoted much of her career to researching Morgan and the more than 1,500 works in his collection now housed at the museum.
