A traditional and ritual Bamileke material, Ndop is an assembly of coton stripes, sewn edge to edge with white patterns designed on indigo-blue background. All these patterns - geometric, representing animals, stars, sun, etc. - have a symbolic value and make Ndop the ritual cloth of secret societies.
This book, the first ever devoted to Ndop, tells the story of the fabrication of this material and explains its aesthetic and symbolic value. Contributions by specialists provide a comprehensive picture of its evolution and contemporary use.
