In October 1907, a retrospective of Cézanne's work was held at the Salon d'Automne as a tribute to the painter who had died a year earlier. Rainer Maria Rilke visited the exhibition several times. He recorded his impressions in a series of letters to his wife, the sculptor Clara Rilke-Westhoff, who lived in Germany. These writings by the poet show that he was deeply moved by Cézanne's art.
For the first time, this publication contains a complete list of the works in the 1907 retrospective. It allows us to discover all the paintings and watercolours that the curators of the exhibition at the time had selected and considered as representative of Cézanne's considerable output, and thus reflects the way his contemporaries viewed the artist. The book contains thirty-three letters written by Rilke to his wife Clara and his friend Paula Modersohn-Becker between June and November 1907.
