Exhibition at the LaM, Villeneuve-d'Ascq, from 19 November 2021 to 27 February 2022
Like many of his contemporaries, Paul Klee (1879-1940) looked to the creations of "children, madmen and primitives" in his search for a hypothetical origin of art.
This exhibition catalogue re-establishes the dialogue between works from different periods of his career and a collection of objects and documents from his personal collection.
It takes a critical look at the way in which children's drawings, prehistoric art, non-Western art and asylums enabled Klee to rethink his art and to situate himself in an intermediate space, halfway between the myth of an "immemorial fund" and that of modernity.
