Philippe Cognée (born 1957) draws his inspiration from everyday life by photographing the world around him and using photographs as the starting point for his painting. His favourite themes include landscapes in motion seen from a train, restless crowds, alienating urban architectures, banal objects, carcasses and half-faded flowers.

The artist creates his paintings with wax before subjecting them to the heat of an iron. The resulting liquefaction of the material produces a blurring effect, clouding the motif and partially absorbing the subject in the material.

This book devoted to Cognée's works produced between 2009 and 2022 shows the way in which the artist's canvases disrupt the relationship to reality and question the limits of figuration.
