Exhibition at the Musée Bourdelle, Paris, 15 March - 16 July 2023
A major player in contemporary figurative painting, Philippe Cognée has been working since the 1980s on canvases that are instantly recognisable and that generate blurred, trembling visions. A painter but also a sculptor, Cognée is in dialogue with his peers, including Antoine Bourdelle, an assumed tutelary figure.
This catalogue of the exhibition organised on the occasion of the reopening of the Musée Bourdelle is structured mainly around the entire Catalogue de Bâle (2013-2015), composed of 1,100 hybrid works created from images in the catalogue of Basel international fair, and addresses the themes of repainting and proliferation dear to the artist from Nantes. The exhibition also features older works by Philippe Cognée and a group of previously unpublished plant works that enter into dialogue with Antoine Bourdelle's sculpture.
