With a body of work spanning almost five decades, Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) is considered one of the most important Pop artists of his generation. Born in Cincinnati, the artist made New York his home, where he lived and worked until his death.
This exhibition catalogue retraces all the artist's creative periods, as well as the broad outlines of the Pop Art movement. A selection of 150 of Wesselmann's paintings and works in various materials is surrounded by 70 works by the greatest names in Pop Art and its heirs, revealing past influences as well as the artist's impact on future generations.
From Marcel Duchamp to Ai Weiwei, via Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Höch, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Roy Lichtenstein, Kaws, Jeff Koons, Martial Raysse, Meret Oppenheim, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Derrick Adams and Mickalene Thomas, a whole section of contemporary art history takes shape in this unprecedented work.
