Exhibition at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, 16 October 2024 - 09 February 2025
The last two decades of the 19th century saw a new generation of artists invent new ways of painting, notably the delicate stippling of Georges Seurat, the vibrant flat tints of Paul Gauguin and the expressive brushstrokes of Vincent van Gogh. These artists broke with tradition and rethought painting, paving the way for Fauvism and Cubism, pushing art 'beyond appearances'.
This exhibition catalogue brings together emblematic masterpieces from the Post-Impressionist period, including works by such famous artists as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, Henri-Edmond Cross, Émile Bernard, Paul Sérusier, Maurice Denis and Odilon Redon.
Works on loan from the Musée d'Orsay pay tribute to both the individual styles and the common themes that characterise this transformative period in art, offering an intimate look at the masters of Post-Impressionism. Works by the Egyptian artist Georges Hanna Sabbagh (1887-1951) bear witness to the decisive influence of Post-Impressionism beyond Europe.
