Exhibition at the Château de Fontainebleau, 15 September, 2021 - 3 January, 2022
This exhibition catalogue aims to highlight Napoleon's work at Fontainebleau and to analyse the way in which the French Emperor invested the château. Through more than two hundred works - most of them previously unpublished - from the Fontainebleau collections (collections, libraries and archives), as well as from French and foreign public collections, are revealed the sumptuousness of Josephine's fittings, the luxury of the palace's furniture, the Emperor's extraordinary library, the transformation of the François I gallery and the major projects abandoned after the fall of the regime.
This book examines all the facets of Napoleon's artistic patronage of Fontainebleau: architecture, painting, sculpture, decorative arts, libraries and gardens. The result of extensive research, it benefits from the contributions of the best specialists on Fontainebleau and the Empire.
