Niece of Napoleon I and cousin of Napoleon III, Princess Mathilde was a painter and had a close relationship with the arts. In her salons in the rue de Courcelles and the rue de Berri, she received the great writers of her time as well as artists, whose works she collected, including Hébert, Cabanel, Meissonier and Fromentin.
