Exhibition at La Piscine-Musée d'art et d'industrie A.-Diligent, Roubaix, 25 June - 4 September 2022
Throughout the 20th century, many European artists travelled to North Africa, attracted by the generous light and picturesque nature of the region.
Far from colonial clichés and without ideological bias, the couple formed by the painters Henri Vergé-Sarrat (1880-1966) and Rolande Déchorain (1898-1977) made several trips to Egypt and the Maghreb, particularly Algeria, which gave them new inspiration.
This exhibition catalogue, largely based on the donation made in 2015 by Mrs Valia Boulay to La Piscine, studies the North African work of the artist couple.
