This monograph is devoted to the sculptor Alfred-Auguste Janniot (1889-1969), who was one of the major representatives of Art Deco. Favouring bas-relief rather than the ronde-bosse, he became one of the leading sculptors in 1925 thanks to his participation in the Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs, where Ruhlmann chose his Hommage à Jean Goujon for the decoration of his Hôtel du Collectionneur.

Appreciated for the elegance, preciousness, classical purity and decorative character of his style, Janniot took part in the great adventure of the transatlantic liners linking France to the United States. Numerous architectural projects followed. In 1936, at the peak of his career, the sculptor was chosen to design two very large bas-reliefs for the esplanade of the Palais de Tokyo, built for the 1937 Exposition des Arts et Techniques.
