Antoine Robert Gaudreaus (ca. 1680-1746) learned his trade in the heart of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris, where, like the sculptors and painters, he received drawing lessons. He was awarded the title of master cabinetmaker in 1708 and settled in the Faubourg Saint-Germain.

Protected by the House of Condé, he obtained the title of Queen's cabinetmaker in 1725 and was, until his death, the main supplier of cabinetry to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. A great master of 18th-century French cabinetmaking, he made the commode for the King's bedroom at Choisy for Louis XV, as well as the medallion and library in the King's study at Versailles.

Conceived in collaboration with two restorers, this unpublished monograph is the most comprehensive study to date of this exceptional cabinetmaker.
