The sculptures presented in this book, created between the 1920s and the 1950s, belong to the multifaceted language today called Art Déco. Since its emergence in the 160s, this notion and its heterogeneity have raised issues of what it includes and of what it excludes.
This study highlights and puts back in their historical context the sculpted works of the movement. The subject is studied from three perspectives: interwar period avant-gardes and their main actors, sculpture in commercial and decorative arts, and finally architectural and monumental sculpture around the world. The book is completed by detailed biographies of the main artists of the movement.
