Exhibition at the Galerie Brame & Lorenceau, Paris, 20 November - 19 December 2014

Alexander Calder's (1898-1976) graphic work has long been viewed as part of his sculptural work. In the 1930s, influenced by his visit to Mondrian's studio, Calder turns towards abstraction "based on interstellar relations". He favours gouache and the colour red to project onto the white page organic forms and constellations, either telluric or cosmic.

After the war, Calder dedicates himself wholeheartedly to the realization of monumental mobiles and stabiles, as well as paintings and gouaches that testify to his free spirit and boundless creativity. The impressive number of gouaches produced in the last thirty years of his career arouses the magnetic strength and incredible sense of colour that popularized his work worldwide.

This exhibition catalogue from the Galerie Brame & Lorenceau presents a selection of Calder's gouaches on paper which, although less well known than his mobiles and stabiles, seduce by their spontaneity.
