Exhibition at the Galerie Capazza, Nançay, 23 September - 19 November 2023
Claude Champy (1944-) brings together man and the cosmos in his ceramics. In his studio, mechanical, geological and chemical processes merge to form a total work of art, guided by the barely visible but influential human gesture. Although the ceramist wishes to capture the great forces of the universe in his work, he consciously entrusts this part to trial and error, to an intentional loss of control, relying instead on the inherent logic of material and fire.
In this monograph, Champy gives an overview of his studio practice, his most recent works and his working philosophy, commenting on his own sculptures and having them contextualised by experts. The result is a personal book about a unique artist and a retrospective of a body of work that is as powerful as it is elemental.
