Exhibition at the Archives départementales de la Seine-Maritime, Rouen, 1 October 2024 - 4 January 2025
A painter, cartonnier, illuminator and engraver from Rouen, Geoffroy Dumonstier (after 1503 - 1573) was active in Fontainebleau, Rouen and Paris. Trained in Rouen in the world of illuminators and goldsmiths, he was an outstanding representative of the first Fontainebleau school, at the time of François I, before becoming in Paris the father of an important line of sought-after portraitists and a refined illuminator in the service of Queen Elizabeth of Austria and the Duke of Alençon.
This exhibition catalogue brings together a collection of illuminated manuscripts, engravings, earthenware, sculptures, drawings and stained glass by Geoffroy Dumonstier, preserved in France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United States. The book also shows that the artist's works were useful in other trades, such as cartography, bookmaking and earthenware, and presents a number of pieces that give an idea of the imprint of his art on the earthenware and sculptures of his time.
