Lace is a singular material, familiar and so paradoxical. We think it is easy to grasp and yet it is complex, rich with a multitude of definitions and imaginary projections. Two centuries ago Leavers looms drowned out the handicraft of the lacemakers in the north of France with their mechanical music, helping to shape the industrial landscape of an entire region and, in particular, of the two towns that have given their name to a type of lace : Calais and Caudry.
