Considered one of the geniuses of the 16th century, Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) unreservedly adhered to the humanist ideal of the uomo universalis propagated by the Italian Renaissance. He worked as a painter, draughtsman, engraver, architect, designer of stained glass, fortifications and sculptures, ornamentalist, writer, musician, theorist, expert and restorer. However, while Dürer's engraving output, distributed throughout Europe, contributed to his international reputation, his painting skills are less well known.
This richly illustrated volume on Dürer's life and work offers new attempts to interpret and analyse some of the Nuremberg master's works in order to explain the continuing fascination with the artist. The book includes a catalogue raisonné of the paintings - on wood, watercolour or tempera on canvas, or on parchment - the authenticity of which is certain.
