Emile Bernard's painted work still remains largely unknown nowadays. However, the artist proved to be one of the theorists of Cloisonism and Synthetism, at the source of pictorial Symbolism.
Through this first monograph devoted to Emile Bernard, the author chronicles the complex life of the artist and analyses his most significant works, as Madeleine au Bois d'Amour, La Moisson, or Les Trois Races. Unpublished letters and writings by Bernard, and documents coming from family archives support this study.
